Ensuring that you are aware of all phone numbers registered with your ID number in Kenya is crucial for your security and peace of mind.
This process is simple as it involves the use of a USSD code, and it works for Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom lines.
Follow these steps to check and manage the numbers associated with your ID.
Why you should check registered phone numbers
Identity theft is a significant concern, and unauthorized use of your ID can lead to serious issues. By checking the numbers registered with your ID, you can:
- Ensure no one is using your identity without permission.
- Avoid potential legal complications from numbers registered in your name.
- Maintain control over your personal information and prevent misuse.
- Avoid mobile loans initiated and distributed without your knowledge
Steps to check registered numbers
1) Dial *106#
Start by dialing *106# on your mobile phone.
This USSD code is universal and works across Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom networks in Kenya.
This step does not require any special app or internet connection, making it accessible and easy to use.
2) Select an appropriate option: Check my numbers
Airtel
After dialing *106#, a menu will appear. Select the option that says: “Check My Numbers.” for Airtel customers. You will receive the list of your registered Airtel lines via an SMS.
Safaricom
If you are a Safaricom user, go to Deactivate unknown numbers instead, as this screen will display all of your numbers instantly.
Don’t worry, your numbers won’t be deactivated at this point, as you will need to manually select the numbers to deactivate.
3) Reporting and deregistering unknown numbers
If you find any numbers you do not recognize, it’s essential to report them immediately.
Steps for deregistering a Safaricom phone number:
- Select the option that says: “Report Unknown Number.”
- Choose the number you want to deregister from the list provided.
- Confirm the report.
This will alert your Safaricom, who will then go ahead and deregister your line.
For Airtel customers, you will need to visit an Airtel agent to de-register unknown numbers.
4) Cancel reported numbers
In case you mistakenly report a number that you actually own, you can cancel the report.
Select the option that says: “Cancel a Reported Number,” choose the number you want to keep, and confirm the cancellation.
This ensures that your valid numbers remain active.
